This is Arlo. He is 6 years old. I walked in and saw him in a meditative state before his singing lesson. I was pretty shocked and of course beaming with joy! A mixed bag of emotions. I soon felt somewhat at ease and kind of wanted to join in! As my singing students know, being in a relaxed state is crucial to get the best out of your singing! I was sorry to say I interrupted him so the meditation was cut short. Apologies Arlo...
You may find you have jaw, tongue, neck, throat, or mind tension, all of which you were not aware of until it was pointed out to you!
Drawing your attention inward with closed eyes allows you to magnify the sensations of breath, resonance, placement, and over-all body awareness. You may have an area of tension that needs to be worked out, but because you are so busy in your head, you may miss it or push through it. That note or phrase that is causing you frustration may be remedied if you focus more deeply on the feel and allow your body to inform you. Shutting your eyes may be the easiest of your tools to ramp-up your inner awareness.
Next time you are warming-up, working on a piece, or getting ready to walk on to the audition or performance stage, take a few moments - close your eyes, connect with the feel of your breath and voice in your body. Offer yourself a chance go deeply into your instrument and find your divine guidance and creative balance.
You can learn a lot from a child. Being present and being 'in the moment', as frankly that is all we have. No past. No future, yet so many of us cant wait for the next appointment, next email, next, text, next, PING! Stop listen and be aware. Having awareness is everything. Listen to your body....what is it saying? Sore throat? Pounding head? Stop and think or don't for that matter! Sounds simple doesn't it?
If singing practice is getting boring or you have had enough because you cannot get passed a vocal hurdle or you have tension, then take time out and breath. Maybe start again the following day.
Maybe even try meditating like little Arlo...
