'Far from your average girl-band, the Angels are powerful and thoughtful young women with integrity, individuality and flair. Driven by their personalities and their talent as musicians and performers they combine elegance, grace, fashion and traditional feminine glamour all with a classic and timeless edge.' I was in a group not so long ago, ahem! I was signed to a group called NO GOSSIP. We had a good stint, but it was time to fly the nest. We all had other projects to do. I with my teaching, singing, and session work, Ben to do his promotional work, Jen to start her dazzling career in Australia, Natalie and Marlon to focus on their sinigng and Oyana who has is now in a new band called Angels in White.
They have just supported Jools Holland on tour, and have 5 more dates with him! I wish them all the success. Good luck girls!! So the night has been and gone....and what a night it was! Have we all come back to reality yet?! Well done to everyone at the Talent Call final. So many talented people out there! Great to see such great hot talent. Big congrats to my student Adam Dupree, who won the audience vote. He came third. Beat boxer cool dude, Sam Effects came 2nd, well done to you, and singer songwriter, Luke Adams took first prize of £2,500! All 20 acts were outstanding. I would like to give a special shout out to my other students, Nicole McNally and Isla Moir who sang excellent. Nicole at just 9 years old blew every bodies socks off singing Duffy's 'Mercy', and Isla sang a musical theatre song called 'Showoff', and she certainly did just that! She really impressed the audience with her show stopping dance moves including the splits, jumps and spins, catapulting her into the air. It has been a pleasure being part of it all, including the judging. Thank you to the team : ) Good luck to all for next year........ps Don't forget to warm up! Know Your Voice!
Singing in a competition or contest is very different from doing a performance in front of your regular audience. As a contestant, you have to make sure that you select songs that are well-suited for your voice to sing, instead of songs that you may love to listen to or sing but may not suit your voice at all! If you are straining at the top then you know its not the song for you. Its maybe worth some vocal assistance in knowing how to do so. Be Well Prepared! Have you ever forgotten your lyrics…nightmare eh?! Many contestants who take part in singing contests fail because they forgot their words. This is what happens when nerves/ anxiety gets the better of you during an audition. Judges hate to see this, and often blacklist a contestant the moment they forget their lyrics, because it leaves a very bad impression and indicates a lack of preparation! Dress Appropriately for Your Image and Your Song! Knowing what to wear and how to dress in accordance with the image you want to portray as a singer is absolutely essential for singing contests and competitions. A good first impression is extremely important if you wish the judges to remember you as a singer and performer! So make it a positive one. Do Vocal Warm-ups Before You Sing! I can’t stress this point enough!! Be sure to practice your vocal warm ups before you sing and your voice will definitely sound better than the other contestants! At least 30 minutes! Posture work, breathing, scales, hums, lip trill, sirens, you name it, do it. It will help build up your confidencebefore you step onto the stage. Remember singing isn’t warming up! Be original! Want to stand out...for good reasons? Copying another singer's style won't work in a singing competition. You have to wow the judges with your own approach. Sing and move from the heart, and you'll have a better chance of winning. Be natural! Emotion! This is sooo very important. No matter how good your singing voice may be, if you don't show much emotion, the judges won't be moved to vote for you. Think about the words, what do they mean to you? Express the message conveyed in the lyrics. Don’t think robot, think and feel alot! Relax and enjoy Think about it! You can’t sing if you are tense, so relax and enjoy. Do some stretches, or vision yourself on stage, close your eyes and think of the audience cheering and clapping you after and during your performance. Feels good doesn't it? Now take a deep breath. You can do it!! If you have voice that you can depend on to express your inner truth, you, like a lot of people can say it makes you happy!
Scientific research has already proven that vocal sounds as well as other sounds have a dramatic effect on our soul and body. (And you thought a lip trill or a siren was just for fun!) In fact, we know that certain sounds have helped heal people of physical illness. Pretty impressive right? Knowing this, we understand that singing is an incredible lift to our soul! The benefits are too great. (afore mentioned in a previous blog I believe) Just look at the faces of people singing inside a church and you understand the powerful effect of singing. There's a real belonging. Singing makes me happy. That’s why I teach it, and practice it! The more confident you become with your own natural voice and sing out without inhibitions, the happier and easier it will become. Enjoy singing, and it will go further than you have ever imagined. We all have the ability to feel like this. We are all born with vocal cords, so don't hesitate, start singing TODAY! |
